CHINA CHEERS YAO MING SELECTION TOP HALL OF FAME
Along with the 600 million basketball followers, including 300 million Chinese basketball players in China, we join in saluting China’s #1 sports icon & global ambassador Yao Ming on his selection into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame announced on April 4th fittingly in Houston Texas where he made hismark as an NBA star.
Having known Yao since his days as young teenager at the Shanghai Sports Institute I have been very fortunate over the last twenty years to have been involved in a few of Yao’s many developmental moments that have led to his present status as an outstanding gentleman &citizen of the world. Whether it be our sharing a long flight (& a great conversation) back from India at the Asian Basketball Confederation World Qualifying Junior Championships in 1996 (which I managed) where he led China to the title and was selected MVP, his participation in our 2000 NBA Legends Tour, through to BIG staff supporting his operations of the Yao-Nash Charity Game, up to most recently donating our services & basketball publications to the Yao Foundation, it has been a journey that I have enjoyed immensely.
His outstanding accomplishments both on & off the court are too many to list here but here are a few to digest.
His pro career began at the age of 17 with the Shanghai Sharks who he led to the 2001-2002 championship breaking the 7-year run of the Bayi Rockets led by Wang ZhiZhi. He would go on to rescue the Sharks from financial troubles by purchasing them in 2009.
He became the NBA #1 overall selection by the Houston Rockets in the 2002 NBA draft becoming the first overall #1 selection ever to be selected without attending a USA university. He went on to become an 8-time NBA all-star in a career that saw him score 9,247 points, block 920 shots & grab 4,494 rebounds.
Yao participated in 3 Olympic Games and achieved China’s highest sporting honor when he was selected to carry the Chinese flag at both the2004 & 2008 Olympics.
His off-court contributions match his accomplishments on the court. His Yao Foundation is a leader in the support of underprivileged children and relief projects. He serves as a global ambassador for Special Olympics as well as spokesman for WildAid. Most recently he has taken on the responsibility of chairman of the new CBA League organization that will lead Chinese professional basketball into a new commercial & development era. Yao has also been at the forefront in promoting the improvement of school sports in China.
His proud parents Yao Zhiyuan& Fang Fengdi, both basketball players in their day, who Ms. Lin & I have known for close to 20 years, have raised their son in a way we would all like our children to turn out. Now a proud husband to Ye Li, a former China national team player, and a proud father to 6-year old Yao Qinlei “Amy”, Yao is a dedicated family man, entrepreneur, advocate and ambassador for China.
