After traveling to Philippines & Thailand Boston College president Father William J Leahy arrived in Beijing for his first visit to China. Over the past several years Boston College has seen their combined undergraduate and graduate enrollment of Chinese students from the mainland grow to close to 700 so Father Leahy’s visit was warmly welcomed as a sign of friendship and commitment to Chinese students.
Capping off his visit, over 100 family members, alumni & friends of Boston College gathered on October 29th for a gala reception and banquet hosted by Mr. Zhu Zheng Dong, chairman of China Distance Education Holdings Ltd at a traditional Chinese courtyard restaurant. Father Leahy announced that Mr. Zhu has committed to being a founding contributor to a new Institute of Applied Sciences that Boston College is in the process of launching soon.
Another highlight of Father Leahy’s Beijing trip was a visit to the grave site of Father Matteo Ricci, an Italian Jesuit priest and one of the founding figures of the Jesuit China missions. Father Ricci became the first European to enter the Forbidden City of Beijing in 1601.
I was honored to be part of this historic gathering as the eldest BC graduate (Class of 1972) in attendance and thrilled to be joined by my good friend Mr. Daniel Li, proud father of Summer Li, BC Class of 2018, and Ms. Lin Xiao WU, BIG general manager & great supporter of BC. In the near future we look forward to developing further strong ties with Boston College & China.
