It was the summer of 2007 when 4 young 12/u players and 2 junior coaches boarded an airplane along with BIG staff and headed off to the world renowned Longwood Tennis Club (home to the first Davis Cup) located in Chestnut Hill, a suburb of Boston (Massachusetts) for the inaugural “Swing for the Stars” International Camp. Based on that successful experience, several months later on April 28th 2008 at Potters Wheel International Tennis School (Beijing), CTA, Mercedes-Benz & Beijing International Group held a huge press conference to formally announce the launch of the Mercedes-Benz “Swing for the Stars” Junior Tennis Program. Along with the media event, the first “SFS” National Junior Coaches Seminar (that was viewed via live steaming by 780 junior coaches) and “SFS” National Junior Camp were held.
So now here we are 10 years later as we conclude another successful Mercedes-Benz “Swing for the Stars” season. We thought it would be an interesting exercise to review the numbers of our 10-year program that in 2010 received special recognition by the National Sports Bureau as China’s #1 junior sports development program.
“SFS” has brought high performance junior tennis instruction and introductory primary school mini-tennis instruction coast-to-coast establishing programs in 40 cities across China with at-site clinics & classes while leaving behind the critically-acclaimed “Swing for the Stars” Junior Tennis Training & Physical Training Manuals (along with providing annual material updates) created by “SFS” & USTA award winning international coach/consultant Jeff Bearup.
5,000 elite 12/u junior players have participated in Mercedes-Benz “Swing for the Stars” High Performance Junior Clinics & Camps at the local, national & international (USA, Australia & Croatia) levels. Over these past 10 years we have highlighted the fantastic accomplishments of our young Chinese players in national & international competition including Olympic junior singles champion Zheng Sai Sai up to most recently (highlighted in this issue) Wu Yi Bing entering the ITF World Top Ten!
While accomplishments on the court are fantastic news growing the game of tennis is, in our estimation, even more important. In this regard, the Mercedes-Benz “Swing for the Stars” Primary School Tennis Program has really excelled. 113, 600 primary school boys and girls have participated in in-school introductory mini-tennis programs. Due in no small part to the terrific cooperation of school headmasters, “Swing for the Stars” has been promoted in schools to more than 6,000,000 students plus family members!
Numbers do not lie! Mercedes-Benz “Swing for the Stars” is “King of Junior Tennis Instruction”! Our heartfelt thanks go out to China Tennis Association, China’s provincial tennis associations, and participating primary schools. Led by title sponsor Mercedes-Benz (with us all the way!) and our other present-day sponsors Teloon, Longines, &Tennis Masters Magazine along with past sponsors Dunlop, Anta, & Deerway, “Swing for the Stars” has reached unimaginable heights and words cannot fully express our gratitude for their contributions.
Equally our thanks go out to the “SFS” international coaching team of Jeff Bearup (USA) & Josh Rilla (USA), Andrej Tonejc (Croatia) & Joe McCarthy (Australia) along with their teams for bringing to our Chinese players the very best international tennis concepts & techniques.
Certainly, last but by far not least, Ms. Lin & I would like to recognize& thank our BIG Team, coaches & staff, led by “SFS” program director Zhu Yexing, who has headed up this program from the outset, for their dedication and long hours making sure that every Chinese child that participates in “SFS” has the loving care and guidance to “Swing for the Stars”!
