Last year we introduced to our readers, through our SFS international consultant Jeff Bearup, a new rating system developed in the USA by famous Harvard tennis coach Dave Fish and his team Dave Howell & Bruce Waschuk called Universal Tennis Rating (UTR). Unlike the traditional tennis rankings, the UTR system provides tennis players worldwide a common scale to gauge their level of play. Its 16-level scale (from beginners to elite world-class professionals), precisely and reliably determines individual players’ ratings based on actual match results without regard for age, gender or where the matches are played. The score of the match and the rating of the opponent are the only factors that enter the algorithmic calculations.

The Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) organization has reached another milestone: UTR has now processed more than 3 million tennis match results. The stats document the penetration of UTR’s model throughout the tennis world. The 3,011,435 match results have flowed in from 202 nations; they reflect the play of 241,353 athletes and include matches of 2,152 college teams. The pace at which results are entering the system indicate UTR’s rapid growth: its database has grown by 50 percent, from 2 million to 3 million matches, in little more than a year.

UTR attracts tennis data from all over the world as a consequence of the simplicity, accuracy, pragmatic value, and universality of its rating scale. It gathers results from the ATP, WTA, ITF, ITA (U.S. college tennis), USTA (open, 5.0, and junior levels), plus select public and private U.S. high school results and select results from Tennis Canada and Great Britain’s Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), then translates them all into a common metric. Results have also begun to flow in from Tennis Europe.

Beijing International Group has been in discussion with the China Tennis Association (CTA) about how China can begin to adopt UTR in CTA official tournaments as well as expanding UTR participation to all levels of China tennis.
