With a historic leap into World Group qualification on the line the China National Men Tennis Team came up just short of their goal while demonstrating an encouraging rise in court skills dropping their Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Group I Asia/Oceania 2nd Round Tie to Uzbekistan 3-2. The tie was held at the Olympic Tennis School in Tashkent Uzbekistan on July 15th-17th.
The star of this important match that would determine who would move onto the 2017 World Group Playoff level was no other than China’s Zhang Ze who did everything in his power to carry China to victory. Zhang opened the tie by defeating Uzbekistan’s FarrukhDustov in impressive style after dropping his opening set 1-6 bounced back to take three straight sets to move China one up. Zhang in Match #4 with China down 1-2 forged an inspiring comeback down 1-2 to win the final two sets 6-1 & 6-4 over Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin, who had beaten Wu Di in Match #2 in three straight sets, to square the tie at 2-2. Match #3 featured the reunion of China’s doubles tandem of Li Zhe& Gong Mao Xin against what should have been a tired Uzbekistan duo of Istomin&Dustov, who both had played singles the previous day, however it not work out for China as they dropped a four-set match.
And so it all came down to China’s Wu Di, the winningest player in China Davis Cup history, to take China to the World Group Playoff. However, FarruhkDustov had other ideas and completed his three days of consecutive matches in championship style by fighting off a game Wu in straight sets 7-6 (4), 6-3 & 7-6 (5).
